The moon is our closest neighbor, and we have even been there before. And right now, NASA is planning the Artemis 3 mission aiming at sending humans to the moon again but this time not just to visit. This time we will be trying to implement permanent human presence on the moon, and we are actually very determined to do so. Why is this so important, is it economically feasible, and what are we actually going to be doing there?

We live in the information age. Via the internet, we have unparalleled access to knowledge and the ability to share thoughts and ideas with our peers. While this is ultimately one of the greatest advancements in human history, it comes at a cost. In order to make use of it, we need to filter useful and accurate information from the vast ocean of baseless opinions, camouflaged sales promotions, and unsupported claims.

We look at the soil as the substrate in which we grow our plants. But it’s much more than that. It is a teeming ecosystem full of life and is an essential part of every agricultural endeavor. Agriculture has been the backbone of every society since the beginning of human civilization. It provides food for us and the animals we rely on; without it, life as we know it is impossible. In the third episode of our educational platform – Knowledge Spree, we join forces with CPSBB – Center for Plant Systems Biology and Biotechnology to bring to light this burning problem that often remains in the background. Thanks to the scientific researchers at the institute, we have learned a great deal about the complex gene regulatory networks and metabolic pathways governing plant development, how it all relates to soil, and what we as humans can do to protect the world’s soil resource.

As regular modern-day consumers, we take for granted how easy it is to grab a coffee filled with spices from around the world. As we scroll through social media on our smartphones, the ingredients in our drinks are the last things on our minds. Go back 200 hundred years and these are the most valuable commodities in the world. Wars started because of them, empires were built upon them, people have been enslaved. In a way, those rare ingredients marked the start of globalization, and some even helped form the industrial revolution. While peacefully drinking our hot and tasty beverage, let's ask ourselves, "How did all of this happen, and was it worth it?"

In his best-selling book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” Daniel Kahneman gives some simple and some not-so-simple examples of how our own mind is tricking us. He explains that your mind processing is simply divided into two systems – a fast (subconscious one) and a slow (effortful one). The relationship between the two systems and, more importantly – the uncontrolled activity of the first one determines your actions, decisions, and beliefs and, in a way, directs your life.

Is organic farming the way to go or we shouldn’t be afraid of conventional agriculture? Carl Sagan once said that “We are made of star-stuff”. And in reality, all living organisms are made of star-stuff bound by sunlight. This process happens in plant leaves and is called photosynthesis. Photons start their journey from our sun and almost 8 and a half minutes later reach the leaf of a plant, where they get captured from the sun’s rays and give the energy for the plant’s photosynthetic machinery to bind carbon dioxide and form basic carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are then processed to form more complex structures, such as proteins, with the help of other elements like Nitrogen. These carbohydrates and proteins are the basic source of energy and provide building blocks and tools for all land ecosystems, including for us humans.
